Plant Your Own Garden

children flower garden

Teaching kids about gardening helps plant the seeds for self love and peace.

This week we explored  a gardening theme in my yoga classes.  Since the children have been learning about Nature and how things grow, it seemed like a great way to connect everything we have been learning through an interactive story.  We began in circle time by sharing what grows in their gardens at home.

Then I introduced the story:

Are you ready to put on your gardening gloves because we are going to get messy in the soil!

First we cut the grass with our gardening shears.  Next I taught them PLOW POSE so we could get the soil ready for planting.  The children really enjoyed moving their legs in plow and then rolling back up to a seated position.  We were now ready to dig a hole in the soil with our shovels so we could plant our seeds.

Let’s pretend that you are the little seed in the soil.

I had them come into CHILD’s POSE like a seed.  I went around with my rain stick to make the sound of the rain as I watered the “seeds”.  I asked them to feel what it would be like to grow and then peek out from the earth.  The little plants began growing and taking in the light of the sun to grow taller into TREE POSE.  We also grew into pretty FLOWERS.

little girl gardening

I asked the children what else we might find in our garden and they came up with some of their favorite yoga poses including BUTTERFLY, RABBIT, BIRD, and FROG, as well as some very creative ideas, such as ladybugs, grasshoppers, ants and snails and spiders.  We all had some laughs crawling, wiggling and hopping around like insects!

Let’s go inside and wash up!

We sat with our hands on our shoulders and “washed” our dirty clothes in the washing machine while making a swooshing sound and then “dried” them in the dryer, while rolling our arms in a circular motion.

After a long day of gardening, we were ready to relax in SAVASANA and I guided them through a visualization of them sitting in their gardens, looking around at what they had planted and taking in the sights and smells and sounds in their GARDEN!

I ended class with a song called In My Garden, that my friend Scott Massarky had created in collaboration with some children for a Peace Garden Mural Project.  It’s a beautiful and catchy song that all the children loved and by the end of class, they were all singing along!  To find out more about Scott’s amazing project, stop by my blog tomorrow because I will be posting a video of the song.

Stop and smell the flowers.

I even brought a live gerber daisy to my first teacher yoga classes this week.  I placed it in the center of our yoga mat circle and told them it was a reminder that we are planting some new seeds by nurturing ourselves through yoga and relaxation.  It was so rewarding to be able to provide some tranquility in the middle of a busy day for these preschool teachers and educators.

Day 7 of Holiday Yoga-Rest in Savasana

You survived the Holidays!  Now it’s time for some well-deserved RELAXATION…

Today’s pose is SAVASANA, which is the pose of total relaxation and surrender.  Try this pose at the end of a your yoga practice or right before bedtime.

Follow these simple steps for SAVASANA:

1. Come to a lying down position with your legs and feet falling gently out to the sides.

2. Stretch out your arms alongside your body with the palms facing upwards.

2. Relax your entire body, starting with your face all the way down to your toes.

3. Slowly breathe in and out from your abdomen, feeling your belly rise and fall with each breath.

4. Allow your body to come into a state of deep relaxation for 5 to 10 minutes.

5.  To come out of the pose, begin to the deepen your breath and slowly awaken the body by bringing some movement to the fingers and toes.

While lying in Savasana, enjoy this special Guided Cloud Visualization:

Close your eyes and imagine that you are lying on a puffy white cloud.  You’re all snuggled into the cloud, which is like a comfy blankie made of cotton balls.   You can feel the sunlight on your skin, as the cloud takes you higher and higher into the bright, blue sky.  With each breath, feel yourself sinking deeper into a state of peaceful relaxation.  You feel a deep happiness and love in your heart for the people in your life and the world you are a part of.  This feeling washes over you and radiates out to all parts of your body and mind and beyond…like a beautiful light shining out from your heart to the whole world…

Namaste and Infinite Love

From the Heart-A Little More About Me

Hi Everyone!  I am busy at work preparing for the arrival of my book Lucinda’s Magical Yoga Adventure from the printer!

When I started this blog 2 years ago to document my journey during my 200 hour yoga teacher training, I never imagined it would evolve into what it is today.  This blog allows me to express myself and what I’m passionate about…yoga, poetry, spirituality, authentic living, transformation…and hopefully inspire other yogis, educators, parents through my experience. While I’ve been away from writing here for a few months, I’m super duper excited to reconnect with my blog readers, fellow kids yoga teachers and parents as I transition into my new life as an AUTHOR.

A good friend called me an AUTHOR today and it stirred something deep inside of me. I’ve always known I was born to be a WRITER~ I’ve been writing since I could hold a crayon~ and I’ve dreamed of sharing my work with a wider audience because I really love inspiring others through my WORDS. But, being an AUTHOR is something quite different because there is so much more to this role than simply being a WRITER.

An AUTHOR is someone who

  • has a VOICE and is ready to share it with the world… even when it may be received with criticism
  • is unafraid of BEING SEEN…even when she has been hiding for most of her life
  • is a SPOKESPERSON for those whose voices may never be heard…even if they cannot write/read a word or full sentence yet

I share this with you because I want you to know me and WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK.

I wrote this book for my nieces, for the children I teach, for the children who have taught ME more than I could ever learn in a book.  This book was inspired by children and is meant to INSPIRE children (and grownups)…to LOVE and CONNECT with the world in each moment through the MAGIC OF YOGA-which means UNION~of mind, body & soul.

This book is where I connect all parts of me, my love of YOGA & POETRY as one.

I am ever so humbled by the great honor of birthing it into the world. As I embark on this new phase of my journey as an AUTHOR, I am grateful for the gift of WORDS that I have been given to express myself!

Infinite love to you all…

Betty

This month, I will be revealing the inside story of where the seed for this book was planted and how it evolved into what it is today. Stay tuned for more information about the book, the story behind it and a sneak peek into Lucinda’s Magical Yoga Adventure. Here is a photo of me having my own Magical Adventure in the woods…you can find  magical treasures everywhere…

Free Guided Visualization for Children

Relaxation for Children

Like us, children need to unwind and just relax sometimes.  Even the youngest of children, like some of the preschoolers I teach, enjoy “quiet time”, where they can rest on the floor and find a peaceful place inside.  Elementary school age children appreciate some down time after a long day of sitting in class learning and before they go home to tackle their homework.  In my classes, we call Savasana (Corpse Pose), the DO NOTHING DOLL~ “Nothing to think, Nothing to Do, Doing Nothing is Good for You” (poem from Imaginazium Yoga Card Kit).

It has been proven by doctors, psychologists and educators that relaxation for children provides benefits for mental, physical and emotional health.  For more information about this, read this wonderful blog post Children Respond Beautifully from Meditation from Vanessa of Bringing Up Buddhas.  I can personally attest to this because one of kids favorite parts of my yoga classes is the Relaxation at the end.

ED is one of the chronic condition viagra 50mg price faces by men. Ranbaxy produced this effective drug and provided result oriented treatment to cure erectile dysfunction and has help millions women viagra uk of victims to fulfill their sexual desires. Kids LOVE Quiet Time

After jumping like a FROG, barking in DOWNWARD DOG, slithering like a COBRA SNAKE, balancing in TREE and stretching in SUPER HERO (Warrior Pose), my kids usually ask me: “Is it time to lie down yet?”  There is nothing more rewarding than watching a group of little children who find it hard to sit still, lying on their backs with their eyes closed, tuning in to the sound of my voice.  I usually tell them a peaceful story and afterwards ease them back by having them curl into a ball in fetal position and then find their way into a comfortable seated lotus for NAMASTE.  When I look into their faces and see them sitting there blissed out in LOVE and PEACE, I know they they have connected with that deeper part of themselves that can be found when we are STILL inside.

There are many resources out there for Meditation Stories such as Carolyn Clarke’s Imaginations: Fun Relaxation and Meditation Stories for Kids of you can play some calm, soothing music depending on the your class theme or the mood of your children.   I love making up my own guided visualizations, as I read the energy in the room and let the words and imagery express what the children need in that moment.

Yoga Games and an Update

It has been a while since I last posted about my kids’ yoga classes.  Lots of changes in my business and news to report.

I am excited to announce that I have found an illustrator for my children’s book, which will be due out this Fall 2014.  My dream of publishing a book that will touch the lives of children and families everywhere is becoming a reality and I can’t wait to step into this new role of published author/educator and share my book with children at schools, libraries, bookstores, etc!

Stay tuned…

I also want to announce that I have decided to officially move my blog to my website at www.beyogabelove.com so that I will be able to make many more resources available to my readers and kids teachers everywhere.

If you are currently FOLLOWING my blog on WordPress.com and would like to continue receiving notifications of new blog posts and lots of other goodies, please subscribe via email (by entering your email address on the right).   The official move will happen on July 15th, so please take the time to subscribe now and receive your Free Guided Meditation to use in your children’s classes!

I also took the Rainbow Kid’s Yoga Training a few weeks ago and it was such a fun, inspiring experience to PLAY yoga with a community of amazing teachers!  I learned LOTS of new yoga games and ideas to keep my little yogis engaged and focused. I told my students that I had taken a yoga class just for kids yoga teachers and was excited to share all the fun games I learned with them!

It’s amazing how using a simple prop can transform an activity into something special!  I passed my bendy flower, which I sprayed with some lavender oil, around the circle and asked each child to share what they looked forward to doing this summer. Then we all joined our friends in pretending to breathe in the scent of the flower.  All the children were breathing together, as they were waiting to get to smell the flower themselves and we got a lot of Breathing in.

IMG_8197

We began with a game I called Follow the Yogi Leader.  I passed around my bendy flower again and let them know that this game required lots of focus and paying attention to the leader, as we followed every movement or pose they were doing.  The kids had lots of laughs…some children made faces or danced and twirled and we followed what they did!

One of the children’s favorite new activities is so simple to set up AND the children loved it.

It is crucial to watch out for symptoms of lupus so that you can immediately consult with your health care spe viagra in canadat and discussed the options available with your partner. So with the usage of levitra uk men can reaffirm their manly hood. Sex plays a significant role in the life of each and every part. shop viagra online All you need is a set of yoga cards (I used my Yoga Pretzel Deck) or photos of animals and some yoga mats!  Set up mats in a circle and place one card in front of each child’s yoga mat. Explain that they will each be doing the pose on their own mat and then they will count ONE-TWO-THREE-SWITCH! and they will move to the mat to the right of them. You may want to place a sticker or piece of colored tape to each child’s hand to remind them which direction they are going.

IMG_9024

I love finding new ways to use some of my props and resources in my classes!

As you can see, the children really enjoyed this activity and it was great to see them so focused on holding each pose for a while and then moving on to the next pose.  All you need is a little creativity to keep finding new ways to teach yoga to kids!!
